45 mins–1 hour Beginner 3.8k downloads

This crochet bauble is worked in the round in a simple sphere shape — the same construction as amigurumi. A small gold cap and a hanging loop finish it off. Make a whole set in different colours and they'll become a family heirloom. Each bauble takes less than an hour and uses only about 15g of yarn.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Work the bauble sphere

With main colour, MR. Round 1: 6 sc. Round 2: inc all — 12. Round 3: *sc, inc* — 18. Round 4: *sc sc inc* — 24. Rounds 5–9: sc all — 24. Round 10: *sc sc dec* — 18. Round 11: *sc dec* — 12. Stuff firmly with toy stuffing. Round 12: dec all — 6. Fasten off, leaving a tail to close the hole. Thread the tail through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight.

  2. 2

    Make the gold cap

With gold yarn, chain 4, sl st to form a ring. Round 1: 8 sc into the ring. Round 2: sc all. Round 3: sc all. Sl st to close. Fasten off leaving a long tail. The cap should be a small cylinder about 1.5 cm tall.

  3. 3

    Add a hanging loop

Cut a 20 cm length of gold yarn. Fold it in half and thread the folded end through the top of the cap from inside to outside. Pull the tails through the loop to create a lark's head knot. Tie the tails together in an overhand knot to form a hanging loop about 5 cm long.

  4. 4

Attach the cap to the bauble

Position the cap at the top of the bauble (the closed end) and sew it on securely using the long tail and a yarn needle. Stitch all the way around the base of the cap, going through both the cap and the bauble. Pull firmly — the cap needs to support the weight of the bauble when hanging.

  5. 5

    Decorate and finish

Add decoration if you like: sew on tiny seed beads, embroider small snowflakes or stars with a contrasting yarn, or wrap a length of thin ribbon around the middle and tie a bow. Weave in all remaining ends. Make a set of 6–8 baubles in different colours for a full tree display.

⚠️

Common Beginner Mistake to Avoid

Stuff the bauble firmly — a loosely stuffed bauble will look deflated and won't hold its round shape. Push the stuffing in gradually with a pencil or chopstick to fill every corner before closing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What yarn colours work best?+

Classic Christmas colours — red, green, gold, and white — are always popular. Metallics and sparkle yarns look beautiful on a tree. Try a variegated yarn for a multicoloured effect.

How do I add a sparkle effect?+

Use a yarn with a metallic thread running through it, or hold a strand of thin metallic thread alongside your main yarn as you crochet. Both methods add a lovely shimmer.

Can I make them scented?+

Yes — add a few drops of essential oil (cinnamon, clove, or orange) to the stuffing before closing the bauble. The scent will slowly release and make your tree smell wonderful.

How do I store them between years?+

Store in a box with tissue paper between each bauble. They're much more durable than glass baubles — they won't shatter if dropped — and will last for decades with proper storage.
