Crochet Leaf Wreath

A beautiful door wreath made from simple crochet leaves in autumn tones. Attach them to a wire ring for a handmade decoration that lasts for years.

2–3 hours Beginner 4.2k downloads

This wreath is made by crocheting a collection of simple leaves in autumnal shades — rust, gold, olive, and cream — and wiring them onto a metal ring. Each leaf takes about 10 minutes to make, and you'll need around 20–25 leaves for a full, lush wreath. It's a brilliant project for using up small amounts of leftover yarn, and the finished wreath looks stunning on a front door or above a fireplace.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Make the leaves (make 20–25)

Chain 12. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in next 3, 3 sc in last ch (this is the leaf tip). Now work back along the other side of the foundation chain: sc in next 3, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st to first sc. Fasten off leaving a 15 cm tail for attaching to the ring. Make 20–25 leaves in a mix of autumn colours.

  2. 2

    Prepare the wire ring

Wrap the wire ring completely with brown or green yarn. Hold the yarn tail against the ring and wrap tightly, covering the metal entirely. This gives the leaves something to grip and makes the wreath look finished from the back. Secure the end with a knot and trim.

  3. 3

    Attach the leaves

Use the long tail on each leaf to tie it firmly to the wrapped ring. Vary the angle and overlap the leaves generously so the ring is completely hidden. Work around the whole ring, layering leaves as you go. Mix colours and sizes for a natural look.

  4. 4

    Fill any gaps

Once all leaves are attached, check for gaps and add extra leaves where needed. You can also add small crochet berries (magic ring, 6 sc, pull tight) in red or orange for extra texture. Tie a ribbon bow at the top for hanging.

  5. 5

    Hang and display

Tie a loop of ribbon or twine to the top of the ring for hanging. The wreath is not weatherproof, so hang it indoors or in a covered porch. Store it flat in a box between seasons — the leaves hold their shape well and the wreath will last for years.

⚠️

Common Beginner Mistake to Avoid

Make all your leaves before you start attaching them. Laying them all out first lets you plan the colour arrangement and make sure you have enough before you commit to the ring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size wire ring should I use?+

A 25–30 cm (10–12 inch) ring is a good front-door size. Smaller rings (15 cm) make sweet table centrepieces. Wire rings are available from craft shops or online.

Can I make this for Christmas?+

Yes — swap the autumn colours for red, green, and white, and add small crochet stars or snowflakes among the leaves. A few jingle bells tied on with ribbon complete the look.

How do I stop the leaves from drooping?+

Stiffen the leaves with a light spray of fabric stiffener or a diluted PVA glue solution before attaching them. Pin them flat while they dry and they'll hold their shape permanently.

How much yarn do I need?+

About 20g per colour — so 80–100g total for four colours. This is a perfect stash-buster project for small leftover balls.
